Obituary

Edward William Lent passed away peacefully on the morning of October 12th, 2021, at the age of 81 years at Sky View Nursing home in Croton on Hudson, NY, overlooking his beloved Hudson River. Edward William Lent was born on January 29th, 1940 to Fredrick Lent and Anne (Ennis) Lent of Verplanck, NY. Edward is predeceased by his sister, Lucille (Lent) Simmons. He is survived by his wife, Jolene (Hesslegrave) Lent and his children Edward M. Lent, of Putnam Valley, NY, his wife Rosalie and grandchildren Edward and Matthew, daughter Melissa A. (Lent) Wassil of Verplanck, NY, her husband Frank and grandchildren Jared and Brenna, daughter Kimberly (Lent) Koski of Cortlandt Manor, NY, her husband Keith and grandchildren Keith, Kyle and Kaden, and son Michael J. Lent of Brookfield, CT, his wife Christine and grandchildren Grace and Colin. He also leaves behind many special cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends, along with his grand dogs all of whom meant the world to him.

Edward was born at Peekskill Hospital and grew up in Verplanck. He graduated from Hendrick Hudson High School in the Class of 1959. On May 1, 1965, he married Jolene Hesselgrave and together they raised their family in Verplanck. He worked as a lineman and Shop Stewart for Con Edison for 42 years. Edward had a passion for baseball and basketball which he shared with his children and grandchildren. After graduating Hendrick Hudson, he went on to play baseball for the Washington Senators minor league team, travelling up and down the east coast. He was inducted into the 2006 Inaugural Hen Hud Hall of Fame. Edward served our country in the National Guard and helped to serve and protect the town he loved as a volunteer fireman for the Verplanck Fire Department. Edward’s greatest love was his family, friends, dogs, and baseball. To quote him, “just be a good person and that’s all” are words we aspire to live by. His family will always remember his response to their “I love you’ s”...”ditto kiddo”.

In lieu of flowers, the Lent family asks that you donate to the Edward William Lent Memorial Baseball Scholarship Fund for Hendrick Hudson High School. Donations will be handled by Jolene Lent. Ed devoted time sharing his passion for baseball at his alma mater, Hendrick Hudson, where he mentored many as a pitching coach for 28 years. “Coach Lent” has always shared a special bond with his “baseball kids” and kept in touch with many long after they graduated. Family will be accepting condolences on Friday, October 15, 2021, at O’Mara & Carpentieri Funeral Home, 97 Broadway, Verplanck, NY from 3:00 - 8:00 pm.
